The course I’m designing will be asynchronous. I do appreciate the synchronous session we have in our Lamar courses and if my course were accessed by learners at the same time I think it would make sense. I’m designing my course though so that it can be accessed by learners at any date or time so having synchronous sessions won’t work. What I like about synchronous sessions is how they bring people together for live collaboration and the role they play in creating that “class” atmosphere. I also really appreciate that they are recorded and I have access to watch them again, pause when necessary etc. If synchronous sessions are offered in online courses, access to a recorded session is a must for learners.
There may be a group of learners who take my course at the same time and they will communicate through the discussion boards and encouraged to have a synchronous meeting if possible. That being said, the course will be designed and set up as asynchronous so learners are free to access at their own pace, time, and place.
