Learners Come First

Since we don't have much time before getting started, I've thought a lot today about the specific focus of my LMS course as I'm sure most everyone else has as well.  I'm not quite sure yet if I'm going to focus on EPortfolio creation and development or reflection.  Whichever is the case, I find myself referring back to content and completed assignments from EDLD 5389 Developing Effective Professional Learning as well as paying close attention to one of this weeks' readings, "Standards for Professional Learning".

In order to ensure success for my participants in my online course, I'll need to put my learners first, not the specific learning goals.  I'll need to design a course where my learners take an active approach,  using skills that I've shown them and transfer them to their own creations.  They'll need time to play around with EPortfolio hosting sites and figure out which one suits them best for their needs and likes and as well as make choices regarding how they will design their own EPortfolios.

By promoting active engagement, voice and choice, and the ability for learners to use authentic materials that are meaningful to them, I'll help learners to have a deeper understanding, stronger motivation, as well as experience opportunities to problem solve and become confident in their own abilities within the creation and use of EPortfolios.  I'll need to design my course so that learners practice their new skills, collaborate with their peers regarding content and their own personal experiences, as well as provide modeling and coaching for my learners.

Ultimately, my goal here is for learners to complete my LMS course with an EPortfolio started and have the necessary resources to support them as they continue to use their EPortfolios, using them as examples for their own students.  In writing this, it's helped me to solidify what my focus will be and I'm going to have a lesson be on reflection rather than the entire course.
