I've done a lot of reading and listening recently as to what constitutes a solid and functional ePortfolio in today's world. Here are my findings:
1. The ePortfolio can be both a working and presentation portfolio. There is no need to create two. On the contrary, the one ePortfolio is significantly more meaningful and powerful in that it combines the artifacts, reflections, evidence, communication with others and provides a lens in which to see all of the components that came together to put forth a presentation of a project or the like.
2. The ePortfolio should be accessible to a wide audience and not burden them with language that interferes with their ability to understand one's reflections, goals, work, etc. Of course, there are times when specific domain vocabulary needs to be used, but there are many times in an ePortfolio when this vocabulary doesn't need to be used and shouldn't, so as to not create a barrier between the author and the audience.
3. The ePortfolio is a living and continually evolving domain that the author uses frequently and is a true representation of the owner.
4. The ePortfolio is a place where individuals can directly communicate with others through general comments, constructive feedback, and questions to spur more conversation and growth.
5. The definition of an ePortfolio from a 2007 CETIS SIG mailing list discussion between Sutherland and Powell: "An e-portfolio is a purposeful aggregation of digital items – ideas, evidence, reflections, feedback etc, which ‘presents’ a selected audience with evidence of a person’s learning and/or ability".
6. In an ePortfolio, meaningful connections between an individual's current work, research, discussions, and reflections tie directly to the past and present experiences of the owner. It's a living breathing document of one's personal journey.
