Drowning in Data

Kotter’s comments regarding communication and ways that work well to get information to others resonates with me. It’s true that if a ton of information is shared, people feel overwhelmed and won’t even bother to look at what you’ve sent/given to them. I’ve seen this happen at teacher meetings actually in my own district. Literal pages are shared or passed out and people ignore the majority because it’s simply too much to deal with at the moment. People may have the intention of going back and reading later, but we all know how busy teachers are. Those documents and saved digital pages aren’t looked at again.

I agree with Kotter that the best way to get important information across and to communicate our ideas with others is to be efficient and to use a type of communication that is used often, if not daily. A format that is used in this manner in which others are familiar with won’t be overwhelming or ignored. I can see how this type of communication keeps the topic at the forefront of people’s day, leads to collaboration regarding the experiences and ideas others have regarding the new vision, and the acceptance of others to play along if you will and contribute to the effectiveness and process of the new innovation.
