Breaking it Down

Mayer’s multimedia design principles, which are discussed by Bates in chapter 8 of his book, while helpful are not new. It reminds me of EDLD 5389 Developing Effective Professional Learning where Nancy Duarte’s videos are used to help DLL students create powerful multimedia. I do appreciate Mayer’s principles and how they’re listed out in the book because they serve as a checklist. This is helpful to me both at the moment as I create my LMS course for this class, but also in the future whenever I’m creating multimedia.

Mayer includes Talbert’s key design principles in this chapter as well and they are equally helpful: Simple, short, real, and good. Mayer also provides specific questions for teachers when they are considering media for instruction and these questions also serve as a checklist. All of these supports that Mayer provides in Chapter 8 of his book will help me as I plan and develop my own media for my LMS course as well as those I plan for in the future.
